Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos

This book provides a gripping account of events from the Korean War (1950-1953). I’ve read two other excellent books by the author, and this one is just as good.

I loved the period’s atmosphere and the interwoven stories of brave Marines, pilots, and soldiers. I found it interesting that some men met Elizabeth Taylor, and their descriptions suggest she was delightful and they enjoyed themselves immensely.

Serving together in hard battles, these stories highlighted the men’s profound devotion to one another. The story of Tom Hudner risking his life to rescue Jesse Brown is awe-inspiring, especially considering their contrasting backgrounds and the racial issues of the era. Jesse’s strength of character and tremendous love for his wife and daughter were touching. Following Jesse’s wife and daughter, Daisy and Pam, and learning about their lives was heartwarming.

Another Marine, nicknamed Red, also captured my interest. It was fascinating to read about him and others before, during, and after the war. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have just started Voices of the Pacific, another page-turner.

I highly recommend Devotion. It is truly inspiring to read about these admirable people from the Greatest Generation, their sacrifices, honor, and values. Many thanks to the author for another amazing book. Keep ‘em coming.
